Imagine the energy needed to turn that great wheel and people waiting to fill their water containers. According to a local elder, it took fourteen turns to bring water to the surface and thousands of gallons were drawn. Note the (arrowed) metal weight. This created a flywheel effect to help maintain momentum. |

Beside the main Lewes road many travellers pass by the 'Wheel Pump' on the village green, but few will stop to contemplate the work and skill of its origin shown on the plaque at the back of the water trough - long since used as a planter for flowers. The WI booklet depicts the Wheel Pump House on its front cover. |

Much time and effort by WI members went into the production of a booklet entitled 'A Walk Around Ringmer'. Originally a Millennium project available through local outlets, it proved to be a popular resource for both residents and visitors. |
